Tips on how to drill ceramics!

We know that the drill is a widely used tool for different purposes in different areas, which makes it an essential tool. Knowing the importance of the drill, we will teach you some tips for using the drill, such as drilling wells and drilling ceramics and tiles. Come on, guys!

In order to make the holes in the wall and in the ceramics, it will be necessary to use a drill, which, as the name implies, the drill has as its main function that of making holes, but the vast majority of them combine the functions drill and hammer, drill and screwdriver, in addition to the three functions in just a single product, which can provide us with a better service.

Drilling tiles, porcelain, slate, ceramics and certain walls is not so easy, and it is very common for certain difficulties to arise in the execution of the hole in these places, as they are very hard areas and offer little adhesion.

General tips and care

As previously mentioned, there are several types of drills, each with its own characteristics, some for professional use and others just for a hobby. Having a good drill in hand is essential for and performing good service. In this example, we will use the battery drill from Starrett, as it is a very complete tool, as it has several settings for use with more force (high torque) or drilling speed, in addition to also being a screwdriver.

The first item that we should be concerned with when doing this type of service is safety, so it is essential to know how to use an electric drill, in addition use gloves, goggles and even masks, due to the dust that appears during drilling.

Another precaution that we must take when making any hole in the wall or ceiling, is to know if in the place where we intend to make the hole, water, gas or conduit pipes do not pass for example.

In order that the location where the drilling will take place is not soiled, we recommend the use of a dust collector, as all the dirt that arises from the drilling will be retained inside the container, not soiling the place and its surroundings.

There are basically two points that we should be aware of when making the holes in a tile, the first of which is the type of coating of the ceramics and tiles, as they are generally very smooth and hard. The bit to be used does not have enough grip and therefore slips. To solve this problem we recommend using a punch.

The second point that we must be aware of is in relation to the type of drill to be used, therefore we must always be concerned with using the correct drill, that in this situation we must use a video drill. The drill is a fundamental factor when carrying out works in this way, be aware of the type of drill, as there are bits for metal, wood and concrete for example.

The punch has a fundamental function for making holes in tiles, because when we try to drill without using the punch the drill is slipping, due to not having enough adhesion on the enameled surface of the tile.

To perform the drilling in the tile, the first thing is to mark the hole, then use the punch to give a slight break in the enamel on the surface, so that the drill bit will adhere to the exact location of the hole.

The great tip to carry out this type of work is to start the hole without using the hammer of the drill and with low rotation, so only after passing through the tile use the hammer if necessary, this detail is essential, as this prevents the tile break or crack.
