A sling is a tool used to hook objects, either to lift, transport and / or drag them. These tools are usually made of steel and synthetic materials such as nylon or polyester.
How is a sling used?
Although these tools are quite simple and intuitive to use, we must first determine the work to be done in order to select the most suitable sling.
Some of the most important factors to consider when selecting a sling are:
If they are for lashing and hitching or for lifting: Since the slings that have a ratchet cannot be used for lifting because there is a risk that they may come loose. The same thing happens when they do not have a ratchet and you use them to hook.
Other factors to take into account is the maximum load supported by the shape and weight of the body. All of this data can be found on the tool label.
What to do before using a sling?
Before using this tool, a visual inspection should be made to detect imperfections such as thread breakage, breaks or unusual wear.
Choose the right sling . either for lifting or mooring.
During the first steps it must be ensured that the load is well supported to avoid possible slipping or body movements.
Types of slings
There are different types of materials that are used to manufacture these tools such as: steel, polyester and nylon.
Mainly there are 2 different categories, but we can find different types within each category.
They are probably the most common and most used since they are the cheapest and most basic. These slings can be used in a “U” shape to increase their load capacity.
Within this category we can find:
Eye and eye
These are special for cargo, such as for machinery, construction materials, etc. They are called an eye because at their ends they make folds in the form of grommets where the object to be maneuvered is hooked
These were created with the same characteristics as those of the eye and eye but with the only difference of having twisted eyes for greater comfort.
Inverted eye sling
These are mainly used to load cylindrical materials such as tubes, rods, tubs, etc.
Basket or wide body
These have a wider surface which makes the load better distributed and the loading of materials is easier.
Double width sling
These are characterized by having a hook either at one end or at both ends, to achieve a much faster hooking.
These function as a belt since they have a safety system that locks the selected size of the sling.
As its name implies, it has more than 1 sling connected to facilitate the lifting of large bodies, since it adds more than one point of support.
Round or cylindrical
This type offers a longer duration and load capacity, thanks to its shape allow greater flexibility and adaptation to the bodies to prevent slipping. Within the round slings we can also find eye and eye, inverted eye, endless and multi-link.
When common slings are not suitable for the type of work being carried out, special ones are needed. They only cover the work you do so they are not that common.
Some examples would be the net sling, for loading planes, buildings, for glass, for acids, etc.
