What are electrical panels?

The electrical panels are practically metal frames that are used to protect all the control and control components of any electrical system, from a basic circuit of a home to the components of a more complex one such as that of an industrial machine.

Although the sizes and shapes may vary depending on the application they are given, there are essential parts that can be found on any electrical board.

 

Cabinet

External part that is responsible for protecting all the components of a control circuit, mainly we can find them of metal although on some occasions and depends on their application we find them of plastic.

These rails serve as a base to be able to mount all the components that will be used for system control.

These bars are made of a conductive material and are used to supply electrical current to the board components, usually, they are used when a large amount of energy is needed.

They are plastic channels where the cables are placed to take them from one place on the board to another.

They are also known as clematis and are practically electrical connectors that clamp the cable through a screw, these terminals are mainly used when the cables are going to leave the board towards an external component such as a motor or an actuator.

The components may vary depending on the type of system needed, from a basic one with fuses and protections to a more complex one with Plc’s, contactors, motor guards, timers, and so on.

 

Types of electrical panels

We can find and classify different types of boards either by their application or by their content.

Distribution Board (TD)

These are responsible for distributing the electric current to different points of the system. Within this type we can find three different:

  •  Main distribution: they are those that connect directly to the power line and have a master or main switch capable of cutting off all power supply.
  • Secondary distribution:   They are derivations of the mainboard and are responsible for controlling small parts of the system.

Motor Control Center (CCM)

This board is characterized by having as main components contactors, relays and all kinds of components that are used to control electric motors.

They serve to distribute small electrical charges such as contacts and lighting.

Power control 

The main feature of this type is that it controls a large amount of electric current ranging from 1,000A to 6,000A and voltages up to 600v in alternating current.

This type is composed of different self-supporting boards where each one is designed to fulfill a specific function such as control, protection, control, and measurement.
